NATIONAL HOME CARE ASSOCIATION CELEBRATES
NATIONAL HOME CARE MONTH—NOVEMBER 2012

There are 77 million Baby Boomers only years from hitting retirement age and seniors numbering 35 million, a significant portion of the American population either is or will soon be evaluating their options when it comes to long term care.

Home care continues to be the only answer to caring for sick and disabled loved ones because of the increased demand on health care providers, personal preference, and increased public awareness of the availability of home care services, new technology and added cost –effectiveness of home care. It is for this reason that we celebrate National Home Care Month and embrace the theme, “Celebrating Freedom: Quality Care at Home”. Functional Independence Home Care embraces the national theme, “Home Care: Love in Actions,” by simply living up to our mission to, “Provide a higher standard of homecare services and to improve the quality of life for those we service in our communities.” We have a firm philosophy which we have embedded in the minds of our staff and hearts of our patients which is simply stated, but as a profound effect, ”Caring is our Business.” We are extremely proud of the quality focused staff that are rooted and grounded in the provision of providing exceptional patient services.

Therefore, as we celebrate National Home Care Month, Functional Independence Home Care takes this opportunity to celebrate a successful accreditation
year of providing quality patient care services. The Organization was accredited by CHAP (Community Health Accreditation Program) a year ago. CHAP accreditation demonstrates that Functional Independence meets the industry’s highest nationally recognized standards for quality
home health care services. Rigorous evaluation by CHAP focuses on structure and function, quality of services and products, human and financial resources, and long term viability.

At Functional Independence Home Care, we believe in Agape Love when it comes to our patients. This simply means unconditional love. This is truly the type of love our national theme is focusing on when they reference, “Love in Action.” As medical providers it is not always about what we say it is often based on
what we do. Realizing the importance of going beyond what the patient expects means realizing the true value of our organization.

As we celebrate National Home Care Month, the Functional Independence
Home Care family is making sure we are constantly revisiting our mission and assessing our values: commitment to excellence, collaborative approach to patient healing, customer responsive innovation and last but certainly not least integrity. These core values truly define Functional Independence Home
Care,” Love in Action.”

THANKGIVING HISTORY
The Pilgrims observed a 3-day feast of Thanksgiving in 1621, but the Thanksgiving feast was not repeated until 1676. They voted to proclaim June 29th as a day of Thanksgiving and Native Americans ceased to be invited. A hundred years later, in October 1777 all 13 colonies joined in a thanksgiving celebration George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789 and later, President Thomas Jef-ferson opposed the idea. It wasn’t until 1863 that President Abe Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving. President Franklin Roosevelt changed the date to be the next to the last Thursday in order to create a longer Christmas shopping season. After public uproar, two years later, he changed it back. In 1941, Thanksgiving was finally sanctioned by Congress as a legal holi-day, as the fourth Thursday in November.
